How to choose the right inkjet printer Most of us use our printer for text documents and color graphics and are not intended as photo printers. With that in mind, it narrows the field down. The most important features to look for are cost per page and duplex capability. A duplex printer automatically prints on both sides of paper which reduces paper usage. The easier question is whether this needs to be a multifunction (fax, copier, scanner, printer) machine or just a standard printer. To figure cost per page, you will need to research which cartridges yield the most pages. These vary wildly. Some cartridges print 150 pages and cost $14.99. That's 10 cents per page – yikes! About $10,000 per gallon if you are keeping score. Certain HP printer cartridges print more than 2400 pages for less than $40; quite a value under 2 cents per page, actually. This “page yield” number is a standard based on 5% page coverage. If the document is graphic heavy, then these page yield numbers will be much lower. Most office supply stores provide this information on their website or in their catalog. Or check the manufacturers sites – search “page yield” with the cartridge #.

If your printing requirements are 1000 pages or more per month, then step up to a laser printer as they have dropped in price dramatically over the years. Laser prints much faster and provides better quality text and graphics. Photo prints are a whole other area best left to photography websites to measure.
